Pottery Classes: Wheel Throwing

Explore the transformative world of ceramics in personalised one-to-one or couples classes led by ceramicist Carrie Lang. Nestled in her small private art studio, these sessions are tailored to your skill level, whether you're a complete novice or seeking to refine your skills.

Each class emphasises playfulness, exploration, and the artistic process, encouraging you to connect with the clay and not just the outcome. Set within an inspiring private artists' warehouse above the Fish Quay in North Shields, you'll find a community of creative professionals. After the session there are a number of great local craft breweries and restaurants to explore right next door.

All materials are provided, so you can concentrate on your craft. Take a break from screens and enjoy the hands-on pleasure of working with clay, along with its calming benefits.

TASTER SESSIONS

TASTER SESSION - Beginners Wheel Throwing

2 hours, private tuition = £40 for an individual, or £70 for two people

Saturday Afternoons or Sundays

Wheel Throwing Lessons take place at Carrie Lang’s Clay Lab, this is a  small private art studio with a maximum of 3 students per session.

In this relaxing and mindful pottery taster session, you’ll discover the fundamentals of wheel throwing, perfectly suited for beginners or those looking to brush up on their skills.

Carrie will guide you through the process of centering and shaping clay into simple forms such as bowls, cups, or trinket dishes. All materials and tools included.

By the end of the class, you’ll have created your very own unique clay piece.

For an additional £5 fee, we will turn, fire and finish off your creation with our classic standard glazes!** Embrace the therapeutic benefits of working with clay while enjoying a hands-on experience away from the digital world. A great gift for yourself or to enjoy with a friend.

**Please note that, as this is a small independent artist studio, firing schedules vary, we will talk about the dates of each firing and when you can expect your pots to be ready to decorate or collect based on what you have made in the sessions.

SHORT COURSE

SHORT COURSE - Beginners wheel throwing 4 session bundle

Short Course: 4 x 2hr sessions is £140 for one person, or £240 for two people.

Saturday Afternoons or Sundays

Wheel Throwing Lessons take place at Carrie Lang’s Clay Lab, this is a  small private art studio with a maximum of 3 students per session.

If you’ve caught the clay bug after your taster session, our 4-week beginners throwing course is exactly what you need! Join Carrie as she guides you through the entire process of creating pottery pieces from scratch. 

You’ll learn essential skills, starting with 

  • how to prepare and wedge your clay, 

  • then dive deeper into various throwing techniques, with plenty of time to practice

  • once your creations reach a leather-hard state, you’ll learn the art of trimming the base or foot of your pots

Throughout the course, expect to make between 2 to 4 unique pieces. All materials and tools included. 

We offer in-house glazing for your creations, or if you’re feeling extra creative, you can sign up for an additional decorating session after your pots have been bisque fired**. It's a wonderful opportunity to embrace mindfulness, connect with the physicality of clay, and unleash your creative spirit!
